About me

My name is Jefferson Randolph Smith II, alias "Soapy" Smith, king of the frontier con men. I was born September 2, 1860. I am best known as a late 19th century American old west confidence man and gambler par excellence. If I may be so bold, I am the most artful grifter of my time.

As a crime lord I organized a large and powerful gang of talented scoundrels and rogues, that I called friends, to take control of the criminal underworlds in Denver and Creede, Colorado, between the years 1884 and 1895, and in Skagway, Alaska, during the Klondike gold rush of 1896-1898. In the latter they called me the "uncrowned king of Skagway."

I was the last of my kind, an old west crime figure who refused to give up the old ways for a constantly changing, modernizing nation. I was shot dead in a horrific gunfight while facing angry vigilantes on July 8, 1898. Four days prior, I was the man of the hour, when I led Skagway’s first Independence Day parade as one of its grand marshals. I stood on stage along side Alaska Territorial Governor John Brady. I had communiques with President McKinley's War Department when I created an all-volunteer militia to fight in the Spanish-American War, but four days later I died, labeled a criminal outlaw.

I was a very talented and complex criminal. Although a bad man, I also considered myself a very charitable man, giving generously to those in need. I was known to my peers and enemies for my bravery and loyalty to my friends, and family.
